California Touring Series launched by local racer to elevate on-road racing scene

Rather than sit around and lament the lack of high-level on-road racing in his local area (and in many regions across the U.S.), Northern California on-road racer Lex Tyler decided to do something about it.

The former Reedy Touring Car Race Open Modified and KO Grand Prix finalist Lex Tyler launched the California Touring Series Facebook page on December 23, 2015, and published the schedule for the inaugural season two days later - offering up quite the Christmas present for on-road racers in the Golden State. With a half-dozen events scheduled from February 27 through August 6, with themes like “Awaken,” “Detox,” and “Judgement Day,” participants will visit the carpet track of 209 RC Raceway in Stockton before hitting national championship-caliber asphalt courses in Ripon, Roseville, Ukiah, San Jose and Fremont. Those looking to qualify for overall series championship points will be allowed one throwout.

Four different classes will be recognized: Modified Touring Car, 17.5 Spec Touring Car, USGT, and F1. Concourse competition winners will be chosen for each division, and the class with the most entries at each stop will run a “Da$h 4 Ca$h.” The races will be shown on LiveRC as well as through the Periscope app.

Major sponsors such as Team Associated, Reedy, and PROTOform have signed on in support as well as TOP, Solaris, R1 Wurks, and Team Powers. On the Facebook page, Tyler describes the CTS as “a visionary solution to increase electric on-road popularity in California,” with the goal to “promote some of the best racing in the United States.”
