Though seeding practice for this weekend's ROAR Electric Off-Road Nationals won't start until 9 AM local time, some drivers traveled to SRS Raceway early to score some extra time on the layout. The large pit area of the indoor facility - which also has a stocked Hobbytown USA shop, as well as an electric go-kart track, slot car drag strip, and a bunch of other cool stuff - kept filling up throughout Wednesday's unofficial "Open" practice.

While walking past the Team Associated pits, I spotted something that looked a bit out of the ordinary.

Not only does the can and endbell look completely different than the previous Sonic Mach 2, but the engraving on the can reads "Reedy Sonic 540 M3" - probably short for "Mach 3."

I snapped a photo and walked away, since there weren't any team drivers standing around when I noticed it - but when I came back a few minutes later, the motor was gone - and, conveniently, no one seemed to know anything about any new motor (and we'll just assume those smiles and winks were nervous twitches, right?).

Reedy hasn't announced anything about a new motor, and because they're not commercially available yet they won't be legal for this weekend's race (even modified-class motors have to be ROAR-approved), so this mill probably won't leave the pit bag for the rest of the week. But if you happen to see an announcement for them in the next few weeks or so, don't be surprised!
