Making its premiere at the 2013-2014 IFMAR World Championships in Japan, the HB R8 surprised the RC world with a well-deserved appearance in the Final. The R8 is the first car from HB to enter the extremely competitive class of 1/8th Nitro Track racing - commonly known as the "Formula One of RC" because of the speed and complexity of the cars. Surrounded by the best drivers on the planet, HB driver Teemu Leino finished 7th overall with the development car, showing that the R8 already had what it takes to compete at the highest levels of professional racing.
 
 
The basis of the HB R8 is the 5mm thick 7075-series aircraft aluminum chassis. This machined slab of top-quality alloy is milled out and strategically drilled through for a lower weight. More 7075 aluminum is used for the upper and lower bulkheads, which are split horizontally for fast belt changes and easy tension adjusements. Precision machined alloy runs throughout the R8, including the suspension mounts, engine mount and layshaft mount. The tops of the bulkheads are fitted with lightweight carbon fiber shock towers, which are fitted with threaded coilover dampers for fast ride height adjustments. Enhancing the extremely low center of gravity are the laydown steering and throttle servo positions. Spring-loaded linkage connects the throttle servo to the brake disc and carburetor, while a servo saver and full Ackermann adjustment is integrated into the steering linkage.
 
 
Most of the weight of the car, including the quick-view fuel tank and radio battery, is centralized for faster weight transition in the corners. Aerodynamic front and rear bumpers increase downforce in the right areas while providing much-needed protection against potentially race-ending crashes. The R8 drivetrain is also optimized for enhanced reliability and efficiency, with a centrifugal clutch for perfect throttle response, 3 Kevlar-reinforced drive belts, lightweight low-friction composite drive pulleys and top-quality bearings throughout.
 
The suspension is completely adjustable, from sway bars, width, rear body mount and more. The highlight of the pivot-ball style suspension is the 2-piece steering knuckle that allows the mechanic to change the kingpin angle very quickly by removing just a few parts, eliminating the need for disassembly and excessive work in the pits.
 
With a range of features designed to enhance driving feel and car adjustability, the HB R8 is purpose-built from the ground up to be competitive right from the start.

“I think the real first experience with the HB R8 is aesthetic, for me it is the best looking car on the market and I immediately had the wish to have it and touch it! I have also noticed there is no compromise on the quality. The aluminium is the best and the anodizing looks brand new even after many runs on my test car. Feeling wise, the R8 is really responsive, the front end is like a knife that cuts the line precisely and is even better than I expected.”
 
The car is great in the hands of world class drivers, but what about club racers?
“It is mainly done for them! Some of my friends actually using other brands tested my R8 as I wanted to make sure to be able to provide a set up for them all have been pleased with how well it performs. The designer Miyashita has a great experience in this field and I have no doubt people will be immediately happy with the HB R8!
