Despite feeling like he had gone backward with his setup for the first round, and then crashing in the "Japanese five-spice" bumps on the left side of the track, reigning 2WD champ Jared Tebo started his title defense with the fastest time. Team Associated's Spencer Rivkin excelled in his first qualifying round ever at an IFMAR Worlds, recording a clean run with no mistakes for the second fastest run, ahead of Polish Schumacher driver and 4WD European Champion Michal Orlowski. Warm-up winner Lee Martin had a "so-so" heat, with the Brit edging Czech XRAY driver Martin Bayer by just over a half-second.
