Midwest Electric Series Race Report:
Report by Rodney Morney

The second round of the Midwest Electric Series was held at Granger Raceway in Granger, IN on Saturday June 29, 2013.
The weather forecast called for rain all day at a 60% chance, of which many racers decided to not take the risk of a rain out. There were approximately 48 entries that had the opportunity to enjoy this great raceway, which was short of our season opener of 101 at RaceEM in Rockford.

The facility was “top notch” and the layout was “awesome”. It was well groomed and they watered throughout the event. Needless to say we never saw a drop of rain all day!

The race consisted of three rounds of qualifying with the Rookie class starting it off. It was Alex Knapper who qualified #1 and Aaron Burton #2. In the A-main Aaron Burton would bring home the victory with some consistent lap times.

There were 2 heats of Stock Short Course. Aaron Cyrier was the top qualifier of the B-Main and Jason Cappiello in 2nd. When the race started it was Dave Reppert who came from mid field to set the pace in the first lap. He made a mistake on his second lap dropped positions and Aaron regained the lead by the 2nd lap. The next lap he battled with Jason for that #1 position. Jason would lead the race with Aaron in tow until the final lap in which Jason made a mistake. The race finished with Aaron to taking the honor in 1st, Jason in 2nd. Both bumped to the A-main. Dave battled his way back to a 3rd place in this race for a podium finish.

The Stock Short Course A-main would have Jonny 5 getting top qualifier in round #3. The race started and it was Jonny 5 taking the lead in the 1st lap. With the rest of the field close behind battling for positions Johnny put it on cruise control and drove a pretty clean race to win the A-MAIN. It was Chris Madsen bringing home 2nd and Mason Perillo who niched out the 3rd place podium.

The Mod Short Course A-main a very good race. Getting top qualifier honors was Brian Burton. J-Dub got 2nd with Tom Knapper qualifying 3rd. The first two laps J-Dub put his nose in front but could not secure the position as Brian got around him the following lap and stayed in front to take home the victory…They finished just as they started on the grid.

The Mod and Stock Buggy race was combined. In the main Mason Perillo and Garon Carrubba were entered in stock buggy class and awarded points to that class. Although running with the Mod Buggy racers Mason qualified in the 3rd position and would finish in the same position, securing a 1st place finish in Stock Buggy and Garon in 2nd.

In the Mod Buggy class, Cush led the way taking TQ in his 1st qualifier. On the start of A-Main the green flag young Cush showed the way and led the race from wire to wire with J Dub in hot pursuit but not getting close enough to make the youngster nervous. Mason Perillo with his stock car came through in 3rd not far behind. Very close racing it was but the kid would prevail and bring home the victory.

The 4X4 Short Course class was most interesting. Not because I was in this race but because the start of the race was pretty “delightful”. Allan Richard had very consistent qualifiers to take the top qualifier. At the start, the horn blew and the racers dashed for the 1st corner which had a moister left from watering. “Carnage” is how I would describe it with all of us in the back bumping and grinding. Once the field settled in it was Allan out front with Cush and Andrew Chupp not far behind. Cush crashed and broke his truck in the following laps. The rest of the field including myself was quickly loosing time to the leaders but we had a battle of our own. Andrew Chupp secured 2nd position early in the race but could not decrease the margin between he and Allan who was on cruise control and took the 1st place honors. Andrew finished 2nd and Joe Couch finished in the 3rd podium position.

The Stadium Truck A-main was the last race of the day, it was also closest race. Dave Fowler took home in the top qualifier position in his 2nd round. At the start of the race, Dave led the way for at least the first half of the race. Aaron Cyrier started in the 3rd position and by half way he made his way into 2nd and then 1st position a couple laps later. He never looked back and led the race to the finish line. Aaron finished 1st with Dennis Thorpe 2nd and Dave finished in the 3rd spot.

This turned out to be a spectacular event. I was glad to be a part of it and look forward to my next visit. The track was “awesome”.
