Midwest Nitro Series Race Report:
Report by Gary Wright

Saturday July 13th Thunder-Road Hobbies hosted the 3rd round of Midwest Nitro Series in Moline, Illinois. We couldn’t have picked a better day or asked for better weather. A nice 84* all day with a very slight breeze would be a very welcome change to what we have had the first 2 rounds, thunderstorm threats and rain delays. With the forecast looking so good we knew we were in for a great time, and how it was!

In the past we have had the pleasure of racing at Thunder Road Hobbies. However this season a new owner had purchased the hobby shop. None other than one of our very own racers, Kevin Bronner made the big leap from R/C racer to hobby shop owner. Some people might have been worried but not me, I knew we were in great hands, I’ve known Kevin a long time. Not only is Thunder-Road one of our stops but also a sponsor.

For the MWNS event Kevin hauled in several tons of fresh dirt for the new layout and did an upgrade to the PA system. As always Kevin and his crew did not disappoint with the track layout or run the event as smooth as possible, just as he did in the past for the previous owners. Kevin and his crew built a technical track that was fast and fun for all levels of racers.
121 entries for the day we ran a full program using 3 rounds of qualifying and full length mains. Sounds like a long day however we wrapped up the day slightly after 11pm thanks to the hard work of the announcers. Yes I said announcers, 3 in fact. Kevin Bronner, his son Kyle Bronner and Fatam (don’t ask LOL). All taking turns on the mic so everyone could race and have fun.

I’d like to thank all our sponsors for the great prizes we handed out before the mains. Without them we would not have a great hobby/sport. Thank you, thank you very much! Advantage Racing Products, M2C Racing, 92Zero Designs, PT RC Racing, Boca Bearings, JConcepts, AKA, Team AE, Panther, VP-Pro USA, Competition Racing Products, VP Power Master Fuel, Buku Performance Products, and Thunder-Road Hobbies.

In the E-Truggy class Mike Aschliman was the man to beat taking the TQ. However Mike would not give an inch in the 10 minute main holding the lead from start to finish. Rick Seffrood moved into 2nd after Brian Zeine pulled off due to mechanical issues and Blaine Robbins would go from 6th on the pole to 3rd.

The E-Buggy class we saw none other than Michael Paige running away with the top spot. Michael doing what he does best raced wire to wire out in front in the 10 minute main lapping the field twice. Joe Sorwell would get 2nd moving up from 4th on the pole and Josh Karl kept 3rd on the pole finishing 3rd overall.

Intermediate Truggy Travis Stensrud took TQ honors. He also ran a flawless race out in front, wire to wire for the 25 minute A main. Jessie Wolkenheim moved up from 6th to 2nd place and Anthony Patyk moved from 4th to 3rd on the podium.

In Intermediate Buggy Anthony Patyk took TQ honors however Matt Cockrum would bump out of the B main and work his way through the field to take the top spot on the podium. Anthony would have to settle for 2nd and Matt Byrd would move up the field from 8th on the pole to get 3rd.

Pro Truggy none other than Michael Paige would take the TQ honor. With this main stacked with the fastest racers in the Midwest it would be one to watch. Sonny O was on the pole in second, Greg Baumel in 3rd and Jeff Wood 4th. Sonny O stayed on Michael’s back door for most of the race looking for an opportunity to make his move. Unfortunately half way into the 30 minuet A main catastrophic failure would sideline Sonny letting Jeff Wood who moved up to 3rd take 2nd place. Greg Baumel would finish 3rd on the podium.

Pro Buggy Jason Hudson was on fire all day taking the TQ. Josh Karl was 2nd on the pole position followed by Sonny O in the 3rd spot and Jeff Wood rite behind. Jason Hudson back on his game kept the number 1 spot from start to finish in the 30 minuet A main. Early in the race Sonny O made his move to 2nd and never looked back. Half way into the main Jeff Wood moved up to 3rd and held it to the finish.

I’d like to thank all the racers that attended our little event, I find the best part of having these events is seeing everyone have fun.
