Race report from Thumb RC:

Rippees dominate at Thumb RC Championship Series Race #2

Round #2 of the Thumb RC Championship Series was held this past weekend in Gagetown, MI. The event featured 8 racing classes from Novice up through 1/8 E-Buggy. The race featured 2 qualifying heats and 2 mains per class. After the dust settled, Seth and Bradley Rippee came out on top in multiple classes.

Novice
Annabelle took the early lead in Novice qualifying and racing. She took 1-1 finishes in the mains and finished one lap ahead of 2nd place both times out. Second on the day was Tom Claringbold with 2-2 main finishes. Following Tom home for 3rd place on the day was Noah with 3-3 main finishes.

Mini Scale (1-12 through 1-18)
New for this round of the series was the addition of a mini scale class. It was a battle of attrition for these drivers as the rough track took it’s toll on the cars. Brad Bolzman was the only driver to finish both mains and took home the overall victory with 2-1 main finishes. Second on the day was Ron Burgandy. It looked like Ron had first place locked up until his car gave up the ghost late in the second main. He finished with 1-2 main finishes. Chris Higgins had issues with his mini and could not finish the first main.

1/8 Scale
The 1/8 scale class featured some of the best driving of the day. It was one of the largest classes as well. Bradley Rippee quickly established himself as the man to beat in qualifying. Seth Rippee was a close 2nd just a few ticks of the pace. Bradley took the win in the first main by over a lap with Seth coming in 2nd. Dennis Sauvage rounded out the podium one lap behind Seth. It appeared to be business as usual in the 2nd main for Bradley as he got out front early and began to gap the field. However, he had a mechanical issue that forced him to slow his pace and allowed Seth to take the main event win along with the overall finish. Seth finished with 2-1 scores. Bradley had 1-4 scores for 2nd overall. Chris Higgins and his Caster Racing buggy rounded out the podium in 3rd with 4-3 main scores.

4WD Buggy
The 4WD buggy class was another battle for the racers. Only two were left standing after the dust settled. Chris Higgins took the first main event win but ran into mechanical issues that caused him to slow his pace in the second main. Bob Keyes took the overall win with 2-1 main scores. Chris followed him closey with 1-2 scores. Toecutter was unable to finish the first main and settle for third place on the day.

Open Short Course
The open short course class was the biggest class of the day. It allows both 2 and 4 wheel short course trucks to race together. Bradley Rippee was the top qualifier in both rounds with Seth Rippee less than ten seconds off the pace each time out. Once the main started, it looked like a repeat of the 1/8 buggy class for Bradley. However, he suffered mechanical troubles around lap 8 that allowed Seth to take the lead and the first main event win. Dennis Sauvage finished in 2nd and Toecutter came across in 3rd. The start of the second main featured carnage in the first corner that allowed Seth to build a comfortable lead. Bradley was buried in the pack due to his poor finish in the first main. With about 2 minutes to go, Bradley made a pass on Seth for the lead and checked out for the second main event win. Seth won the overall via 1-2 scores. Dennis Sauvage was second overall with 2-3 main finishes. Bradley came in third overall with 6-1 scores.

The top 3 finishers were within 20 seconds of each other at the finish of main event number 2 which featured some great racing.

This class provided excellent racing throughout the day. Bradley Rippee finally broke through with a dominating performance in both main events. He lapped the field twice each time out and finished with 1-1 main scores. Second overall on the day was Tom Claerhout with 3-2 main finishes.
