Race report from Team Orion:
 
Team Orion Wins 5 Modified Classes at 2014 Surf City Classic!
 
 
 
The 2014 Surf City Classic was held August 1st-3rd at OC R/C Raceway in beautiful Huntington Beach, California. Every year this event brings in the top SoCal drivers along with many of the top drivers from around the country. This years track layout consisted of a very well built, flowing track with many difficult jump sections that would challenge the best drivers. The total entry count would reach an impressive 374!
 
 
 
Team Orion would have a very strong Team at this years Surf City Classic consisting of: Ryan Cavalieri, Jared Tebo, Ryan Maifield, Dustin Evans, and Frank Root.
 
 
 
RACE SCHEDULE
Friday, August 1st: Open Practice
Saturday, August 2nd: 3 Rounds of Qualifying
Sunday, August 3rd : 10-minute Single A-Main Events
 
 
 
In the 2wd Modified Buggy class, Team Orion's Ryan Maifield would TQ rounds #1 & #2 of qualifying to take the overall TQ.
Maifield would take full advantage of his #1 starting position and lead the field around for the first lap of this 10-minute A-Main. Maifield would stretch out his lead to a comfortable 5-second gap and maintain it throughout the race. An incident with a lap car with only 2-minutes left would allow his Team Orion teammate Ryan Cavalieri to close up right behind him. Maifield would drive perfect and not allow any room to pass and take his first Win of the weekend.
 
Team Orion's Ryan Cavalieri and Jared Tebo would finish 2nd and 3rd overall to complete the Team Orion podium sweep!
 
 
In the 4wd Modified Buggy class, it was Team Orion's Ryan Maifield that would go onto TQ all 3 rounds of qualifying to take the overall TQ honors.
 
Maifield was on another level in the 4wd Buggy class this weekend and continued to impress during the 10-minute A-Main. Maifield would go onto lead every lap and take the Win by a considerable margin to record his 2nd overall Win of the weekend.
 
Team Orion's Jared Tebo would finish 2nd and Novak's Mike Truhe 3rd overall to round out the podium.
 
 
 
In the 1/8 Electric Buggy class, Team Orion's Ryan Maifield would TQ rounds #1 & #2 to take the overall TQ.
Maifield and Cavalieri would start 1st and 2nd for this 10-minute A-Main showdown. Maifield set a fast pace early that Cavalieri would be up to the challenge to match. Throughout the entire main event, both drivers were never more than 3 seconds apart on the track. As the race came to an end, it was Maifield crossing the finish line first and taking his 3rd overall Win of the weekend.
 
Team Orion's Ryan Cavalieri would finish 2nd overall and Tekin's Rudy Rico 3rd overall to round out the podium.
 
 
In the 2wd Modified Short Course class, Team Orion's Jared Tebo would TQ rounds #1 & #3 of qualifying to take to the overall TQ.
 
Tebo would hold his lead for the first couple laps of the 10-minute A-Main. Tebo then made a small mistake through the center jump section that handed the lead over the 2nd qualifier Ryan Maifield. Maifield would then put in fast laps to pull away from the field and never relinquish the lead to take home his impressive 4th overall Win of the weekend and making it a clean sweep in all classes he raced.
 
Team Orion's Ryan Cavalieri and Jared Tebo would finish 2nd and 3rd overall to complete the Team Orion podium sweep!
 
 
In the 4x4 Modified Short Course class, it was Team Orion's Frank Root that would TQ rounds #1 & #2 of qualifying to take the overall TQ.
 
Frank Root would set a fast pace to begin the 10-minute A-Main. After a couple laps were in the books, Root had stretched out his lead and a few laps later was gone. Root would go onto take the Win by a big gap to take the overall Win and Team Orion's 5th Modified class Win of the weekend!
 
Team Orion's Jake Thayer would finish 2nd overall and Tekin's Ryan Dunford 3rd overall to round out the podium.
