Peachy performance for Pietsch at 200mm European Championships

Mugen Seiki on-road designer Robert Pietsch won his second 200mm European Championship last weekend in Valencia, Spain. The 2011 champion was the fastest in qualifying, won his semifinal (albeit with a slower time than opposing semifinal winner Teemu Leino), and pulled away from the field for a one-lap cushion in the 45-minute final.

Leino and Pietsch quickly pulled away from the field at the beginning of the main event, with Pietsch assuming the lead as pit stops cycled through the first half of the race. Pietsch chose to change only right-side tires while Leino stopped for a full-set, which extended Pietsch’s lead. Leino never had a chance to make up the difference as he lost the lid to his fuel tank on his penultimate fuel stop; he recovered only to finish 7th. Leino’s bad luck promoted local driver Eduardo Fernandez-Escandon to the runner-up position and Swiss 1/8-scale specialist driver Simon Kurzbuch to third. Reigning champion Alessio Mazzeo finished fourth.
