Lecoyer & Protusiewicz win big at Thumb RC Championship Series Race #3

The race included 2 qualifying heats and 1 main per class. This race was called “Super Saturday” and 2 overall winners were given three foot trophies at the end of the day. Those winners were Troy Lecoyer and Justin Protusiewicz.

Novice
In the novice class, Brandon Donaghy led from start to finish. He was the top qualifier and lead nearly every lap of the 7 minute main event. One lap behind in the main event was Annabelle Hutchinson. David Binder finished third on the day followed by Kenny Green who bowed out early with mechanical troubles.

1/8 Scale
The 1/8 scale class featured some of the best driving of the day. It was one of the largest classes as well. 12 entries were split into two different mains. The fastest drivers were seeded into the “A” main, while the slower qualifiers went to the “B” main. The winner of the “B” main gets to bump up and run the “A” main as well. In the “B” main, Captain Kirk led from start to finish over 4 other drivers and took a convincing win. In the “A” main, Troy Lecoyer started third but was into the lead after the first lap. By the end of the race, Lecoyer held a thirty second lead over 2nd place Russell Chester. Third place went to Steve Boldizar and fourth was Troy Turner. Second through fourth were only separated by six seconds at the finish line. Rounding out the top five was Chris Higgins.

Bischer held a five second lead at the checkered flag. In third place, twelve seconds back of Patrick was Mike Roe. Justin Crandall and Rob Selves finished one lap off of the lead pace in fourth and fifth place.

4WD Buggy
The 4WD buggy class was a battle of attrition for most of the drivers. Top qualifier Justin Protusiewicz led the first 2 laps of the main event until he suffered a mechanical issue that turned his car into a 3wd vehicle. #2 qualifier Chris Higgins also had mechanical issues that caused him to pull off on the third lap and finish a few laps off the pace. #3 qualifier Jeff Hutchinson had an uneventful main. He passed for the lead on lap three and never looked back. At the finish, Jeff held a one lap lead over second place. Stephen Martek finished in second while Bob Keyes came in third place.

Open Short Course
The open short course class featured great racing for the day. Justin Protusiewicz was the top qualifier followed by Jeff Hutchinson in second and Troy Turner in third. Once the main event started, Justin was quick to build up a lead over second place. Jeff was able to make a pass for the lead on lap four but encountered wheel issues that forced him out of the race. Justin went on to take an easy win over Chris Higgins in second. Third place was Brent Singer. Fourth went to Bob Keyes and fifth was Jeff Hutchinson.

2WD Buggy
2WD buggy was the largest class of the day. There were fourteen entries total. The top 8 qualifiers went to the “A” main while the other six went to battle in the “B” main. The “B” main had three different leaders throughout the race. However, when the dust settled Stephen Martek made a last lap pass on Justin Crandall to take the win and bump up to the “A” main. Chaos ensued at the start of the “A” main which allowed Stephen to come from starting last to leading the race. Stephen led the main for two laps and ran second for another three laps before falling off the pace. Slowly working his way through the pack was Troy Lecoyer. He was as far back as fourth in the main, but got into the lead on lap four and steadily pulled away.  Russell Chester was the only other driver to finish on the lead lap in second place. Third went to Patrick DeGuise.
