Yesterday, the main events wrapped up the 28th annual CRCRC Midwest Winter Championships at Ohio R/C Factory as four drivers each won a particular discipline, taking two related class wins after a weekend of racing. Nearly 480 entries were separated among 8 racing classes, ranking one of the oldest yearly races one of the largest as well. Not only did the annual kickoff to the off-road racing season pit two of the fastest racers the RC world (and certainly the U.S.) has ever seen, Ryan Cavalieri and Jared Tebo, against one another in four different classes, but gave two up-and-coming stars a chance to shine.

Tebo and Cavalieri have made a habit of dominating the "MidWinters" over the past few years, and after qualifying the battle between Orion and AKA teammates heavily tipped in the Kyosho frontman's favor as he earned TQ honors in all four 1:10 Modified classes.

Tekno RC driver and Midwest hero Joe Bornhorst did the same in 1:8 Electric Buggy and 4WD Short Course, and young Californian Rudy Rico earned the front row starting spot for both Stock 2WD Buggy and Stock Short Course.

Modified 2WD Buggy

Tebo used the TQ advantage to his favor in A1, sprinting away for the fastest A Main time in the class and taking an easy win over Cavalieri, but dropped out of A2 with a mechanical failure just before the two-minute mark of the seven-minute race while Cavalieri evened the score. The 2011 World Champ outlasted a three-way battle with the 2013 World Champ and former national champ Travis Amezcua in A3, in which the top three were separated by less than two seconds, to win the overall. The second-place finish in A3 for Amezcua over Tebo was good enough to help him recover from a DNF in A1 to take the final podium spot.

Modified 4WD Buggy

Once again in 4WD, Ryan Cavalieri upset Top Qualifier Jared Tebo to take the overall title, but did so this time in the first two A-Mains. Cav won A1 by just over seven-tenths of a second and stormed off to a convincing clincher in A2 with the only 25-lap run of the day. To wrap up second overall, Tebo won A3 in Cavalieri's absence by over eight seconds over local Associated driver Alex Miller, who had bad luck in the first two mains and finished sixth overall. Travis Amezcua's third place finishes in A1 and A2 once again put him on the box in third.

Modified 2WD Short Course

Despite the disappointment in both buggy divisions, Jared Tebo kept truckin' on Sunday - taking the win in 2WD Short Course after two not-so-close main events. While Tebo's SC6 sped off to a 23-lap run in A1, the fastest of the main events, TLR East Coaster Max Flurer took advantage of some rough luck by Cavalieri to steal a 2. Tebo beat Cavalieri straight up by over four seconds in A2 to seal the deal, and Cavalieri walked away from Flurer in A3 to set the final finishing order.

Modified Stadium Truck

Tebo ruined the debut national race for Team Associated's RC10T5M, striking early by holding off Cavalieri by just nine-tenths of a second in A1 while Michigan's Aydin Horne, one of two very fast sons of long-time pro Allen Horne, finished third. Cavalieri had trouble in A2 and finished third behind AE teammate Tanner Denney (driving the CT4.2) while Tebo completed the sweep by over 13 seconds. With Tebo sitting out A3, Cavalieri won to wrap up second overall and Horne bounced back from a DNF in A2 with a runner-up finish to clinch the final podium spot.

Modified 4WD Short Course

Joe Bornhorst had trouble keeping the back behind him in A1, as MIP's Matthew Olson and TLR driver Dylan Gerard went 1-2, but the Tekno RC team pilot stormed back for easy wins in A2 (ten-second margin) and A3 (got by for the only 24-lap run) to wrap up the title from TQ. Gerard finished second in A2 while Olson managed only fourth, but suffered a DNF in A3 and gave Olson the opportunity to sew up second.

1:8 Electric Buggy

Bornhorst suffered no such setbacks in 1:8 Electric Buggy, beating Gerard by three seconds to win A1 and earned a victory lap in A2 over Jimmy Vanderhaar and Gerard to close the door early. Gerard nearly lapped the field in A3 to clinch second overall, and Serpent's Paul Ciccarello added up quiet third-place finishes in A1 and A3 to take the final podium spot.

Stock 2WD Buggy

Spencer Heckert stole the show in A1 of Stock Buggy as he beat TQ Rudy Rico by less than seven-tenths of a second, but had to settle for second as Rico simply pulled away in A2 and A3 to take the title. Austin Horne came back from a DNF in A3 to add his own podium finish to the Horne family's haul for the weekend.

Stock 2WD Short Course

Rico had an easier time in Stock Short Course, beating Russ Bryant by seven-tenths of a second in A1 and over ten seconds in A2 to wrap up the title. Tyler Cook, who finished fifth in A1 and third in A2, won A3 by a second and a half but couldn't overcome Bryant on the tiebreaker, leaving Bryant and Cook to finish out the podium.

The action resumes in the frozen Midwest this weekend as the CRCRC Midwest Winter Indoor Nitro Championship celebrates its 20th year.
