Welcome to LiveRC's weekly column, "Talk-It-Up Tuesday!" Here we spend a little time talking with industry icons including racers, manufacturers, team managers, developers, promoters, and everyone in between! Sit back, relax, and go behind the scenes as we interview them all!
Jake Dellinger is one of the fastest nitro off-road racers from Texas, a former ROAR Nationals finalist, and will be one of the Americans representing the host country at next week's IFMAR World Championships in Las Vegas. Even when he's not at the track, he's not far away from RC - working at his family's hobby shop. Learn more about Jake and his RC career in this week's Talk It Up Tuesday.
Aaron Waldron: How old are you, and where are you from?
Jake Dellinger: I’m 23 years old, and from Pearland, Texas.
AW: How did you get into RC, and how long have you been racing?
JD: My dad and I had a few basher cars - a Traxxas T-Maxx and a Duratrax Evader ST - that we used to beat up in fields. Sometime in 2003 I got my first "race" car, the Kyosho MP7.5 RTR, and raced it at the local track the first day we got it. I have been hooked ever since!
AW: When did you decide to start taking racing more seriously, traveling to larger races and acquiring sponsors?
JD: I would say around 2007, when I picked up my first sponsor - RCAmerica/XRAY. That’s when my dad and I started to travel to the bigger races.
AW: What do you currently do for work? Is it difficult finding time to commit to practicing and racing?
JD: I currently work with my dad at our hobby shop, Victory R/C. It’s not hard to find time to go to the track since my dad is my boss and really supports my racing and allows me to make a lot of the races that I want to attend.
AW: How long have you worked in the RC industry? Do you like it?
JD: After finishing school in 2013 I started working at our shop full time so about 3 years.
AW: What’s your favorite track? Favorite big event? Favorite racing class?
JD: My favorite track has got to be Thornhill Racing Circuit - the place is just amazing and is always getting better! My favorite big event would be the Southern Nationals; they always build great layouts and the surface is one of a kind. My favorite racing class would be 1/8-scale nitro buggy.
AW: What are your most proud racing moments?
JD: Definitely making the the ROAR Fuel Off-Road Nationals final in 2013.
AW: Do you have any goals for your RC career?
JD: Making the final at the Worlds would be great! LOL
AW: When you’re not at the racetrack, what are some of your favorite hobbies?
JD: Riding my bike, hanging out with friends/family and chilling by the pool!
AW: What’s the best part of RC racing? What about RC racing annoys or bothers you?
JD: Traveling to new places and meeting new people and making friends with people that love the same stuff that you do. Nothing about it bothers me - I love every part of it!
AW: Who are some of the people that have helped you the most?
JD: I would say my mom and dad for supporting me from the day this all started.
AW: Thanks for the interview! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
JD: I would like to give a big thank you to all my sponsors: Team Associated, Pro-Line, VP Powermaster, AVID, and Victory R/C.
