Spy shots of prototype PROTOform Mazda touring car shell [UPDATED]

[UPDATE: 2/26 4:54 PM CT] The photo showing Ryan Cavalieri's car was removed, as it did not show the Mazda body in question. Instead, a photo of Randy Caster's car - with the new Mazda body, was added below.

While Steve Burgess of Rugspin Graphix was firing away at Tamiya America Raceway last weekend during the third round of the California Touring Series, he noticed JJ Wang was using a new PROTOform Mazda-based body.

The new shell is a long-awaited follow-up to three incredibly successful Mazda bodies from PROTOform, as the previous Mazda6 GX debuted in 2013, the Mazdaspeed 6 was introduced in 2007 and the original Mazda 6 in hit the market in 2003. The first Mazda 6 is the only one that's listed as discontinued on the brand's website.

Both drivers ran all-white paint jobs, as is common in touring car but especially when you rushed to prepare a new lid, but the plain color shows off the body's broad nose, compact cab and well-defined wheel wells. The third generation full-size Mazda 6 has been on sale since the 2013 model year, but received a new family code GL in May 2016 - it appears the new PROTOform body reflects the dize of the most recent facelift.

Of course, more information is expected ahead of the body's release.
