In just the first five months of 2017, electric off-road racers in New Jersey saw the choices of indoor dirt tracks shrink rapidly — one closed, and two converted to turf surfaces. Faced with the impending business slowdown typical of summer, the owners of Critters Raceway in Fairfield nearly pulled the plug on the last dirt track in the area.

That is, before a group of local racers stepped in to take over. President Toby Hamson and five partners  worked out a deal with Critters Hobbies to rent the track space, an 80’ x 34’ obstruction-free clay surface, that will continue hosting races for all popular 1/10-scale classes on Friday evenings.

The first race night for 46RC - named for U.S. highway 46, on which the track is located - will take place on July 7, with hopes that the weekly program gains momentum and leads toward more race nights as well as a club membership, potential discounts, apparel and more.
