Race Report from XRAY - Written by Ty Tessmann:

This weekend was the 2nd round of the JConcepts INS series, and it was held at the TRCR Track in Tacoma, WA.

The track layout was very tight, super technical, fun and challenging.  The grip level was fairly consistent increasing throughout the weekend.  We spent Thursday and most of Friday practicing and getting my cars dialed in, Friday evening we would have one seeding round and I was able to top seed in 4wd and seed 5th in 2wd.  I made a few more changes to my cars Friday night to adjust for the extra grip that the track was developing.

Saturday morning was the start of qualifying, they did 2.5 rounds of qualifying on Saturday, so I ran 3 rounds of 4wd and 2 rounds of 2wd.  I was able to TQ all 3 rounds of 4wd, the qualifying was super close with some of the qualifiers decided by less than 1/10 of a second.  I knew going into the mains that they would be very challenging.  I was able to qualify 2nd in the first qualifier in 2wd and I made some changes to my car that were not good and ended up 8th in the 2nd qualifier.  Saturday night after qualifying there was about 1 hour of open practice and I made some changes to my car to try and improve my results.  After this practice I felt my car was much better.  Throughout the entire weekend tire preparation was absolutely critical, you wanted a tire with very little pin but in doing this you had to stay in the line, if you got out of the driving line the dust would bite you.  Q3 was ran Sunday morning and I managed to finish 3rd which would put me 3rd overall for the mains.  I felt that my car was really good, I just made a couple of mistakes, and I was confident in my car for the mains.

The 4wd mains went very well for me, my car felt really good, but I also knew I couldn't afford to make any mistakes because Ryan Maifield and Dustin Evans were always close, they were difficult races but I was able to take the win in A1 and A2, leading tone to tone.

The 2wd mains were very critical with Ryan and and Dustin starting ahead of me, I knew my only chance would be to stay close and hope for a mistake as our speed was very close.  In A1 I finished 2nd less than half a second behind Ryan who finished in 1st.  A2 I was able to take the win with Dustin and Ryan both making mistakes which allowed me to get by, I finished just over 2 seconds ahead of Maifield who finished 2nd.  Going into A3, I knew Ryan would have to win to take the overall as we were tied in points but my combined time was better than his,  I would do my best to prevent that from happening.  At the beginning of the race all 3 of us were pushing hard, with us running in the order we started in, Maifield would have an incident with a marshall who was marshalling a back marker which put him more than 5 seconds back which would allow Dustin to finish 1st and I finished 2nd which would give me the overall win.

It was a great weekend, we learned some more about the 2wd which was really important and I am looking forward to the next 1/10 race.

Thanks to Scott Brown and the TRCR track for holding a great event.
