Last week my good friend Charlie Suangka shared with me a killer video from a hidden track in the hills of California (
CLICK HERE if you missed the video). In the video, Charlie and friends are ripping their way around a backyard R/C track with their short course trucks and having a splendid good time. While I was impressed by the video as a whole, one thing stood out to me more than anything else...the track. I'm not talking about the layout, I'm not talking about the size, I'm not talking about the obstacles, but instead the track surface itself.
It seems as though almost all major offroad tracks today are hard packed, designed to be as smooth as butter, and sticky like sugar (literally). This hidden track, however, brings back the fluffy, fun, tire friendly, and roost throwing loam of the old days!
What happened to the old school loamy, motocross style offroad tracks? The tracks that used big pin tires and got rolling bumps instead of the concrete pot holes we get now? I USED to think of offroad R/C racing in comparison to dirt bike racing. Indoor racing was the "supercross of R/C" with smooth tracks, technical rhythm sections, and close racing...outdoor racing was the "motocross of R/C" with loamy, fast, wide open, rough tracks and long races. In my opinion, that is not the case anymore when it comes to tracks and track surfaces.
By no means am I saying that I don't enjoy and like the "new style" tracks and track prep/surfaces, BUT I am saying that I do occasionally miss the fluffy fun dirt racing days of the past.
What happened to the days of loamy tracks and fluffy bermed turns? What caused the track surfaces and prep to change over time? Which style of track do YOU prefer, and WHY?
