Over four rounds of qualifying spanning two days, Dakotah Phend was the most consistently fast driver in both Truck and Buggy classes. Phend split round wins with Ty Tessmann, and even though Ty had the single fastest run in each division Dakotah had the better combined times, winning the official tiebreaker. It's the second year in a row that he entered the semifinals with the TQ title in the Buggy division, and certainly has to be the favorite to win at least one, if not both, national championships. I got the chance to photographically dissect both of his vehicles after the conclusion of qualifying for a look under the hood.

Nitro racing is equal parts driving and preparation, and multi-time electric off-road ROAR National Champion Dakotah Phend has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the fastest nitro racers in the country. No doubt benefitting from the help of his experienced TLR teammates, his parents Doug and Nancy, and loads of natural driving talent, racing at the highest level requires top-shelf equipment.
