There's no doubt that RC racing makes an incredible family hobby. Many of today's top pros and those who work in the industry got their start at the local racetrack with a parent, and father-son teams are prevalent at almost every racetrack across the country.

Ryan Maifield has been a staple of the RC scene in Arizona for twenty years, as he too got started racing with his dad, Perry, at a very young age. Perry competed at the first Cactus Classic just a few months before Ryan was born, and came to the track this weekend to watch his multi-time champion son compete. During the final round of qualifying, I got a chance to chat with Perry in the bleachers alongside the track as he talked about the history of the Cactus Classic, his memories of racing with Ryan, and what it's like to watch him win championships as one of today's top pro racers.
