2020 XRS Australia Round 3
Well we finally we got there and Round 3 is in the books.
Sunday morning greeted us with a very overcast day and a high chance of rain later in the afternoon. However, we fought on and apart from a few light rain drops in the afternoon we completed the whole meeting as planned.
Credit to the crew at Castle Hill On Road club for their super smooth running of this event. With 2 rounds of controlled practice in the morning followed by 3 qualifiers and 3 mains is was a massive task (that they performed without flaw).
Now to the racing.
This was some of the closest (and clean) racing I've seen for a long time and proof that a controlled motor and Tyre class brings out the best in all.
Modified Class
The pace of these cars on the back straight at Whalan has to be seen to be believed. The control these guys showed explains why they are the premier electric class. With State and National champions running it was going to be close at the top. In the wash up it was Ari Bakla that took the first 2 finals after some close racing with Simon Nicholson. John Puse, Steven Cornell and Michael Stone were all fighting for that final podium position. With some impressive driving it was John Puse that claimed a well-deserved 3rd place.
1. Ari Bakla - XRAY T4
2. Simon Nicholson - Yokomo
3. John Puse - Yokomo
13.5 Stock Class
The racing at the pointy end of the field was a standout. Pete Wong (TQ) and Brayden Stanley were in a class of their own. All 3 finals were a battle of who would crack. For most of the 3 finals there was merely car lengths between these two. Young Brayden showed his class and took 2 of the 3 mains for an outright win. The minor podium spot was a battle between Damien Zarb, Nathan Tanti, Christian Silva and Adam Clark. On this occasion Damien Zarb took the final step on the podium.
1. Brayden Stanley - Infinity
2. Pete Wong - Yokomo
3. Damien Zarb - XRAY T4
21.5 Sportsman Class
In this class it was a battle of the top 5 (Bruce Seaton, Brett Wilson, Rob Wright, Hayden Smith and Ray Zarb) and all it took was one mistake and the positions were reversed. Brett Wilson was able to secure his first TQ but in the finals it was Bruce Seaton who held his head and came out on top after the 3 mains. This class has shown just how good spec racing is.
13.5 1/12th Stock Class
Im sure these guys have ADHD. Driving these twitchy little cars around a fast and flowing circuit like Whalan requires skills most of us dont have. After the 3 finals it was out of town driver Steven Cornell that took the top step of the podium. This was not made easy as both Dan Maher and Chris Peet didn't give an inch and traded places at every opportunity. Even though they didn't make the podium, the guys in the lower positions were busy having their own battles to hold of mates (bragging rights were at stake here).
