Report by Zak Finlay
Last weekend the XRAY UK team were in attendance at the final round of the popular Essex Winter Series. The drivers were greeted by a slightly different track compared to usual, with no inclusion of the usual ‘main straight’
With both the Modified and Stock championships already wrapped up for the XRAY duo of Kyle Branson and Zak Finlay, there was a relaxed atmosphere heading into the race, but the team still wanted to finish the season off with the best possible results.
In qualifying, Zak Finlay was able to take his XRAY X4’23 to the TQ position after securing the top spot in all four rounds of qualification. He was joined in the A-Main by the XRAY’s of Tony Broad, Ricky Copsey, Ashley Wiffin, Mason Weston and Ethan Southall.
In the final, a random flip from Zak in the opening minutes saw him drop down to 2nd place behind Billy Fletcher. Zak managed to put in some fast laps to close the gap and the pair raced closely for a portion of the race. Unfortunately a slight touch from Zak caused Billy to roll in the final laps of the race. Zak waited and gave the position back, but a body tuck that became apparent at the following corner caused Billy to drop down the order. Zak would take the win, ahead of Tony Broad and Ricky Copsey.
Final Championship Result – Stock 17.5
Ethan Southall finished as top junior in the 17.5 Stock Class after some solid driving this indoor season.
In modified, Kyle Branson was able to race closely all day with Alex Thurston, but missed out on the overall TQ to instead line up 2nd on the grid for the single leg A-Main. Harley Eldridge would line up in 3rdposition. Adam Southgate would line up in an impressive 6th position.
In the final, a stalemate 5 minute race meant that Kyle was unable to make a pass on Alex, so would finish in 2nd place overall for the day. Harley would also finish where she started in 3rd position, with Adam finishing the day in 8th.
Final Championship Result – Modified
This race marked the final carpet race for the team this year and they will now move onto competing in the outdoor UK National Series beginning at the Stafford track in May.
