Exclusive interview: Bruno’s Factors in Obtaining the Electric Touring World's Vice-Champion Title
XRAY: Are you disappointed that you ended up at your first World Championship only in 2nd place?
Bruno Coelho: Absolutely not! When we left home, our objective was always to do our best, and our goal was to get into the Finals. Considering we did not know the track or its conditions, this result really exceeded our expectations.
XRAY: Your performance and 3rd place in qualifying were a huge surprise, and by winning 2 rounds – the same as other 2 drivers – you could have finished 1st. Did you believe that after your excellent performance in qualifying that your placement could be improved in the Finals?
Bruno Coelho: Yeah, I was pretty confident. As I knew the drivers around me and how they are, I got pretty nervous in the beginning. However, at the same time I was confident because of my performance and my comfort with the car, so that cheered me up and encouraged me to fight for a better finish in the finals.
XRAY: After winning the first A-main final, you were on your way to the title and to an absolute sensation. What did you miss in the second and third A-main finals that let the title slip away?
Bruno Coelho: In the second round, a touch with another car happened and I dropped from 2nd place to 6th, but by the end I managed to finish 3rd. When you race at this level, you pay for every little mistake.
In the third round of the finals on Lap 5, I was in 3rd and was closing in on the leaders (Naoto and Volker). I was pressing hard on both and waiting for either to make a mistake when I hit a curb in the chicane what ended my chance for the title.
XRAY: What role did the car play in your final results?
Bruno Coelho: The excellent performance of the car was key to the result I obtained. The T4 was excellent all week without any issues. Martin provided the team with the initial set-up that we were using from the start, and then we worked from round-to-round to improve small details and everyone adjusted their set-up to suit their needs. The only change I made was the differential setting to suit my driving style. The professional teamwork and support have been extremely important, and I would not be able to achieve this without XRAY support.
XRAY: Second place at a World Championship and European Championship is a great start to your international racing career! How do you shift your focus to the upcoming nitro touring World Championship in Thailand?
Bruno Coelho: Right now I have been living my dream. I am very happy that XRAY has chosen me and supported me and allowed me to participate for the first time at these major international events. With all our dedication and spirit, we did our best to achieve the best possible result. We always want to surpass our limits and as such we will continue to work as hard as possible at every upcoming race. With the recent results and the trust and faith XRAY have put in me, I am fully motivated to do my best. The next race for me is the 1/10 nitro World Championship, so wish me all the best luck.
