Race Report from Chehaw RC Raceway:
Written by Lance MacDonald
This past weekend at Chehaw RC Raceway of Albany Ga, was a time for family, friends, racing and most of all remembrance at the 3rd annual Forever Hero’s Memorial. In December of 2016 officer Jody Smith and Nicolas Smarr were tragically killed in the line of duty by a gunman. Smith and Smarr were childhood friends as well as partners on the force.
Chehaw track official and event organizer Steven Danford continues the event with so much more than just racing. On Friday night the first of the 3 day event, a supper in planned at a local restaurant were everyone is invited and welcome after a day of practice.
Saturday begins the event with 3 rounds of qualifying and sportsmanship. Everyone is helping is some way, from volunteering to turn marshal, wrenching on a fellow competitors chassis, evening loaning cars and trucks so racers could fully enjoy the experience.
That night on the grounds of the beautiful Chehaw Park that still shows signs left behind from hurricane Michael. Everyone gathered in covered pavilion for the appreciation dinner. Club members, event staff and racers all pitched in for the pot luck dinner. Food was awesome, deserts were awesome and the cornhole tournament was intense. That just lead to even more laughs and smiles.
Sunday was mains day that was exciting to say the least, Electric classes ran a double 8main format and nitro for a 30minute main.
Electric classes put on a show with race battles taking place within feet of the start finish line.
The most important part was the reason. $1400 was raised for the Smith Smarr foundation, revenues raised and donated to the foundation are used to purchase additional safety equipment for officers serving in the line of duty. We love our first responders, we love the support received from all out participants and sponsors to continue to show support of the fallen officers and the Smith Smarr Foundation.
Mother, Mrs. Sharon Smith Johnson and event organizer Steven Danford.
