Press Release from Crawlers 4 Kids:

The year is 2014. The place is Sandy, Utah. Sam was a young man with a need. He hung out at the local RC track every chance he got, and he obviously enjoyed the cars and trucks, and listening to the drivers “talk shop.” There was just one problem: Sam was a “special needs” youth, and RC trucks and cars are expensive. The drivers were kind to Sam, but they were hesitant to hand the controller for an expensive vehicle to an inexperienced youth; and Sam’s mom could not afford to buy him a truck of his own. The track owner, realizing both Sam’s enthusiasm and his need, had an idea; he gathered up some used RC parts and donated his time to build a truck just for Sam. Crawlers 4 Kids was born.
Today Crawlers 4 Kids is a registered 501c3 corporation – a unique non-profit that donates over a dozen radio-controlled vehicles a year to disadvantaged and special needs youth through a mentorship program; this win-win model provides the opportunity for marginalized young people to engage in a fun hobby while the mentor relationship provides an opportunity for developing character and social skills.
SPONSORED YOUTH
In order to qualify for C4K, a youth between the ages of 8 and 17 must be nominated by a mentor who will work with the youth to develop his/her skills in the radio controlled hobby. Eligible participants must meet minimal criteria for physical, mental, or financial hardship.
Applications are submitted to a board of directors for review and approval; the board reserves the right to request additional information, conduct interviews, etc. in order to confirm the applicant’s suitability for the program.
BE A MENTOR
The greatest need at C4K is for volunteers to sponsor and mentor young people who are interested in the radio-controlled hobby. Mentors must be members in good standing of a local RC community with personal knowledge of the nominated youth. Mentors agree to spend at least an hour a week, on average, with their sponsored youth teaching the fundamentals of the hobby and assisting with basic vehicle maintenance, etc.
