Camden Lime crushed the Junior final at the ROAR Fuel Off-Road Nationals
In 2015, ROAR added a Junior final designated for drivers aged under 16 years old to the Fuel Off-Road Nationals for the first time. The landmark decision came at the suggestion of Tim Lime, a long-time hobbyist and father whose son, Camden had begun rising through the ranks of the Southwestern off-road scene, and offered an opportunity for the next generation of RC racers a chance to shine on a national stage.
This past weekend, the Juniors division once again provided an undercard match-up during the hour-long prep period after the Nitro Buggy semifinals. Whereas in previous years the drivers’ qualifying positions were determined by their performances in the four timed rounds, the drivers competed in a single “rocket round” session to set the grid - and after CJ Jelin disqualified himself from the Junior race by bumping out of the semi into the championship main event, 16 drivers lined up for a 30-minute race for the title.
From the start tone, Camden dominated - leading the entire race and finishing one lap ahead of the field. It was a moment of vindication for the younger Lime, after a DNF last year and a seventh-place finish in 2015 - and a proud moment for us in the LiveRC trailer, as Camden has often joined us to volunteer running our cameras or even joining me to announce races.
He explained earlier in the weekend that finishing well in the Nitro Buggy and Truck classes would be nice, but that winning the Junior final was his goal - and the 12-year-old Arizona native nailed it.
Naturally, Lime’s performance earned him an icy shower on the podium.
