Ft. Knox Raceway Race Report:
Ft Knox Raceway in the Bronx, New York City, kicked off their 2012 outdoor season with the Big Air Challenge trophy race on May 6th. 132 entries turned out to do battle on the new and challenging course that the RCNYC crew built.
TLR driver and RCNYC President Jay "Bless" Armwood took the win flag to flag in 1/8th Nitro Buggy, followed by Kyosho's driver Michael Garramone and Serpent driver Steve Plackis coming home 3rd.
1/8th Nitro Truggy was a wild one, with John Blaze in control for almost the whole race, until a late race problem ended his day with less than 3 minutes remaining. This gave the the lead to Esteban “BBQ” Baquero, who broke a rear shock on his Losi with just minutes remaining. As BBQ limped around the track, Associated’s Barry Goodwin put on a furious charge but he came up just short, finishing 2nd. Ray Vazquez drove a steady race to grab 3rd.
In the electric classes, Mugen driver Gabriel Galano made the trip up from Maryland and was rewarded for his effort with wins in all three classes he ran: 1/8th E buggy, E Truggy and 4wd SCT. Long Islands’ Jonathan Sohl took the win in 2wd SCT, and took 3rd in E Buggy, while fellow Islander Royce Berrio had three 2nd place finishes in E Buggy, and 2wd and 4wd SCT. George Tsakiris grabbed 3rd in 4wd SCT, and 2nd in E Truggy. Rob Birchal nailed down the 3rd spot in 2wd SCT, and G Terry finished 3rd in Electric Truggy.
All the NY area racers thank the hard working RCNYC team for giving us a great and unique place to race. Spectators from the surrounding neighborhood watched the racing all day, really adding to the atmosphere. Thanks to all the local hobby shops and RC companies that have stepped up with sponsorship to support the track, and special thanks to Tom Baffer Sr of Bruckner Hobbies, who along with his sons Tom and Brian handled the race directing, registration, and so much more.
