Future Stars of RC is a regular column on LiveRC where aspiring RC journalist Tyler Hooks has a conversation with fellow up-and-coming racers across the country, covering youth-friendly topics such as school subjects, watching TV, throwing huge whips and, of course, girls. 

Tekno RC has been sponsoring and supporting up-and-coming racers since they first jumped into the racing scene, and one of the racers they've groomed is Mason Eppley. With some solid finishes under his belt on the West coast, Eppley is a major contender wherever he goes, and will be for years to come — learn more about him in this week's Future Stars of RC with Tyler Hooks.

TH: When did you first begin racing?
ME: I started a little over 4 years ago, back in mid-2013.

TH: What is your biggest racing accomplishment?
ME: Probably making both mains at the ROAR 1/8-Scale Electric Off-Road Nationals as well as being the highest-finishing Tekno driver in the Buggy class. 

TH: What is your worst racing failure?
ME: It has to be this year's Manufacturers Cup at Amain. If it could have happened, it did!

TH: Where do you attend school, and what is your goal for a future occupation?
ME: I am currently attending a college here in my hometown called Shasta. The goal would be RC full-time, but more than likely it's probably not going to happen. I'm majoring in criminal justice and plan on becoming a highway patrol officer.

TH: Do you have a girlfriend?
ME: Not at the moment.

TH: What is your favorite class?
ME: 1/10-scale 4WD buggy. I spend most of my time running 1/8-scale, but when i have the chance to run 1/10-scale I definitely enjoy it!

TH: What do you think of the old saying “girls just get in the way of racing?”
ME: I guess it just depends on the girl. I can see some "getting in the way," but I can see some supporting it.

TH: What is your real dream car?
ME: Definitely a Tesla Model S P100D.

TH: Huge whips, driving absolutely flat out or more calculated driving, smoother on the throttle?
ME: Most of the time it's huge whips, but when it's needed I can be a lot smoother and more calculated.

TH: Action Sports or Conventional sports, what do you follow in your free time?
ME: Honestly, I like it all. From motocross to golf, I'll watch it. As long as there is competition!

TH: Who did you look up to when you were an even younger racer, or who has been the biggest help to you as a driver?
ME: I've always looked up to Ryan Lutz and Joe Bornhorst, but Daniel Lewis has helped me the most as a driver. He's always critiquing me on what I can do better, and what not to do.

TH: What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to a new up and coming racer?
ME: Make sure you're having fun. It's so easy to put pressure on yourself and not enjoy it anymore.
