R/C Festival 2012 Report:
Location - Hermanos Rodriguez Race Track
Mexico City, Mexico
The first RC race at the Hermanos Rodriguez Race Track in Mexico City took place last Sunday. The RC festival had 50 drivers from classes ranging from the gas powered 1/5 Scale to the electric Tamiya M03 chassis. The main event was the Inferno GT series with close to 30 drivers looking to take the first win home.
The race was delayed due to bad weather early in the morning. All the drivers waited patiently for the track to get dry and get started with the qualifying rounds. On the 1/10th electric scale, Bonilla took the first pole position. On the other electric category, Garcia set the fastest qualifying time. On 1/5th scale the pole position was for Gomez. For the Inferno GT series, Lorca, the current national champion, grabbed yet another pole position.
The race day was filled with other activities. On the main racetrack, the 6th race of the TC2000 national championship was being held. Also there was race action from the Super Turismos series and the national Moto Pro Championship.
On the M03 category, Garcia confirmed he was the fastest driver taking the win and the fastest lap as well. Belmonte and Esparza rounded up the top 3. Bonilla had problems on the first laps of the 1/10 A main, situation which Martinez took advantage taking the win followed up closely by Esparza and Herrero who finished second and third respectively. The big scale was dominated by Gomez taking the fastest lap and win for the first event. Richerand and Calderon also finished on the podium for the 1/5th scale.
The lower mains of the Inferno GT series were spiced up with light rain, making the drivers change to rain tires before the race and having to go back to dry tires before the race end. On the 40 minute A main, Lorca showed a smashing pace lapping the whole field after 20 minutes. Unfortunately, Lorca crashed his car into the barrier having to retire with a broken car. That accident gave the lead to Gonzalez, as the other drivers tried to catch up to him. The most exciting battle was for second place. Herrero, who had problems early on, charged back from last place all the way to second place. He ran out of fuel on the last 5 minutes of the race and surrendered second place to Belmonte and third place to the leaders brother, Federico. Gonzalez never slowed down and took home the win.
Round two of the 2012 championship will be held in September.
