Earlier this week we revealed the news of JR Mitch leaving his long-time ride at Team Associated and moving on to TLR for 2012. While the news came to a major shock to the industry, we wanted to know more behind it! What brought about the change? Was there a falling out between the two?
JR was nice enough to sit down and answer a few questions for us that the industry has been wondering since the news was released!
LRC: JR thanks for taking time with us to talk about the big change. Let's start at the beginning, when did you first join Team Associated?
JR: I was first with AE back in 94 – 98, and then I went to work for Schumacher U.S.A. for 98 – 2002 and then went back to AE from then till about 3 weeks ago.
LRC: At that time did you see yourself racing for the same company for nearly 14 years?
JR: No, I really didn’t, if I hadn’t had the pleasure of being introduced to Mike Reedy back in the mid 90’s and then teaming up with Jason Ruona in ’09 I don’t think I would still be racing. It’s people like this that make racing enjoyable and fun, I also see these properties in Kevin and everyone at TLR.
LRC: What brought about the shocking change to TLR?
JR: I think the biggest part of my decision to make the change was to have a change and a challenge.
LRC: Are there any hard feelings between you and the guys at AE?
JR: No not at all.
LRC: Obviously you will be changing vehicles, are there any other changes in equipment?
JR: Yes, I will be running Orion, Nitrotane, Spektrum.
LRC: What was your first impression of the new TLR vehicles?
JR: Let’s say TLR as a whole has been great, great people welcoming me in with open arms, the vehicles are top notch with high quality and great workmanship.
LRC: Will you be working for TLR as more than a driver in R&D as well?
JR: Mainly a driver here on the Eastcoast, I will still be giving some input as a driver as I did with AE.
LRC: With the new team, will you be travelling to more or less races for 2012?
JR: Mostly the same races as I ran last year.
LRC: Which race are you most looking forward to with the new cars?
JR: ALL! I really enjoy racing and I look forward to all of the races I go to big or small.
LRC: Thank you again JR for taking some time with us today, is there anything you would like to add?
JR: I would like to thank everyone over at AE for all of the years of support and belief in me, I truly appreciate all they have done, I would also like to thank everyone over at TLR for the opportunity, and I really look forward to a great future with TLR.
After chatting with JR about his changes for 2012, we got a chance to catch up with JConcepts main man, Jason Ruona, who shared this JConcepts video with JR sharing an inside look at his new TLR rides!
