Shortened to a two-day program for the first time, Saturday was a busy day at the 2014 Hot Rod Hobbies Off-Road Shootout as 99 heat races ran into the late evening. With two of only three rounds counting toward the final qualifying order for each of 14 racing classes offered this weekend, racers they had to make every lap count. The top four divisions may have seen few surprises at the top of the charts, but that only serves to ensure excellent racing in Sunday's triple A-mains.

Jared Tebo (left) may enter Sunday's finals as the favorite in two classes, including the premier 2WD buggy division, but Ryan Cavalieri (right) had him covered in Modified Stadium Truck.
Though only eight entries signed up, there was simply no doubt who the fastest driver in Modified Stadium Truck was on Saturday. Team Associated/Orion driver Ryan Cavalieri stamped his authority on the class by sweeping all three rounds and turning in the only 17-lap run, doing so in the heat of the day. Fellow Team Orion-powered driver Jared Tebo will start second on the grid by virtue of finishing second in rounds one and two, but it was Cavalieri's Team Associated teammate Steven Hartson who made the best attempt at stopping Ryan's reign of terror less than a second-and-a-half behind in the third round.
If it wasn't for the rough end to the final round Jared Tebo would've cleaned up in Pro 2 qualifying.
Kyosho star Jared Tebo returned the favor in Pro 2, wrapping up the overall TQ after two rounds to guarantee the front row position for tomorrow's heads-up starts. Running the mid-motor SC6, Tebo looked to be well in command of the class after turning in the only 16-lap run in the first round and improving by two seconds in the next. He would've continued the trend in the third round until two mistakes in the last four laps opened the door for Cavalieri to take the round win and fastest time of the weekend. The duo will have company in the finals, as Cody Turner, Dustin Evans, and Kevin Motter all showed enough speed in qualifying to keep things interesting.
When it comes to blue groove outdoor tracks, few drivers have been able to hang with Ty Tessmann over the last year.
TLR's biggest electric racing hopeful, Dustin Evans, turned in a stellar run in round one to win by two seconds, but current ROAR National Champion Ty Tessmann drove his Hot Bodies D413 to the overall TQ by putting up zeroes in the second and third rounds over what was the most competitive, and crazy, of the modified classes. Evans will start second after adding a third-place finish in the final round, three-time former IFMAR World Champ Ryan Cavalieri managed only six points yet will start third, and behind him the points are a bit of a mess. This set of triple A-mains should be fun to watch!
With the fastest times in qualifying, Jared Tebo looks poised to make a run on Sunday toward another 2WD Buggy title at the Hot Rod Shootout.
Ty Tessmann had the edge in the first round behind the wheel of the prototype Hot Bodies buggy, but reigning 2WD IFMAR World Champion Jared Tebo stole the show by winning the rest of the day to head into the finals as the Top Qualifier. Tessmann backed up his first round win with a runner-up finish in the second, earning the second starting spot on the grid. Despite Team Associated team manager Brent Thielke scoring a 2 in the final round he lost the third spot on the grid via a tiebreaker, forcing him to start behind current 4WD World Champ Steven Hartson.
