The Midwest Nitro Series for 2012 kicked off with a bang, garnering a results board busting 174 entries. The venerable Leisure Hours raceway would host the opener and great weather would ensue, witnessed by racers from at least four states. The track held up pretty well despite the number of entries, but the abrasive surface and cratering that is classic Leisure Hours, would provide the challenge that is 1/8th nitro racing.
In Pro buggy 2011 series champion Jimbo Kvederia would find himself facing off Team Associated’s Michael Paige. In qualifying Jimbo would TQ and hold off the fast shoe from southern Illinois Paige, who would start the Main in a very close second. The A main sees the real race begin as Jimbo’s unclean start put Paige in the lead right off the bat, a position he would not give up easily. For 30 minutes Jimbo’s Serpent buggy would slowly nibble at that lead and in the closing minutes when a slight bobble from Paige meeting a couple blitzing laps from Jimbo was all it took for the lead to change hands. Meanwhile a fight for the the last podium spot would rage all race long with Horizon teammates Sonny Ochea and Colin Weatherholt and their matching Dynamite powered Losi buggies swapping positions till the very end. Sonny would edge out Colin by less then half a second to secure 3rd.
