Our friends at the Midwest Nitro Series have put together a full race report for Round #3!
MWNS Race Report:
Round 3 of the Midwest nitro "winter" series took place Sunday January 15th. Despite the cold outside the competition would heat up inside with a full complement of intermediate and expert buggy. This time the series returns to Leisure Hours raceway with a tight and twisty layout, passing would be a test in patience yet was surprisingly manageable and kept the racing close.
Qualifying used a points system and three rounds. The added pressure of doing well in every round of qualifying would not rattle Horizon Hobbies Sonny Ochoa as he would set fastest time every qualifying round, and subsequently the TQ honors for the day.
In the expert buggy main Sonny would reprise his earlier qualifying performance and have his Losi 8ight lead every lap of the main. Sonny's main threat Jimbo Kvederia would stay with striking distance but could not commit a blow to Sonny's lead, despite continually pulling in the fastest laps during the race. The real battle would be for the final podium spot in the dueling cousins of Derek and Colin Weatherholt, It would be the younger Colin that gets the better of his more prestigious cousin and secures the final spot on the box.
It would still be a TLR sweep of the podium with 8ights taking the top 5 spots.
Expert Buggy Results
1st Sonny Ochoa
2nd Jimbo Kvidera
3rd Colin Weatherholt
In Intermediate buggy, It would be Andy Essary that would mimic SonnyO's performance in qualifying with a top run in every round, but the main would not continue in such a prolific manner. John Hinds would put up the challenge and wrestle first spot away from Andy and lead a good portion of the race but a few bad laps in the latter third would allow Essary's to march past and continue with a win. Hinds despite being consistently quicker, was no match to the consistency of Essary. Rob Kassel would take his midfield start and chip away a final podium spot.
Intermediate Buggy Results
1st Andy Essary
2nd John Hinds
3rd Rob Kassel
The Series concludes at Raceworld in Griffith, Indiana February 26th, the championship win for expert buggy may be locked up but that won't mean an intense battle for the final spots. See you there!
