FTW Race Report:
With beach balls bouncing across the track, inflatable palms trees tripping up providing shade for turn marshals, and a cardboard cutout beautiful hula trophy girl, the 2012 edition of RCHQ’s Summer Classic was proof yet again that race weekends are always better when infused with a healthy dose of levity. We’ve come to expect this from the wonderfully wacky RCHQ crew. Further excitement was created by the graffiti-covered plywood skateboard ramp integrated into the track, creating a kicker jump that sent cars sky high. Mercifully, 1:10 classes were allowed to take a bypass lane here to avoid certain carnage.
San Antonio’s own Mike “Ironman” Battaile won every class he contested, dominating the event with five class wins: nitro buggy, e-buggy, 2wd SC, 4wd SC, and truggy.
FTW co-founder Joshua Riewe took the top spot in the 1:10 2wd buggy, and took third in both 2wd SC and nitro buggy.
Technical gremlins besieged Tyler Hooks in 4wd SC and nitro buggy, but he salvaged the day with a solid third place finish in e-buggy.
