As an R/C racer my life has become quite accustomed to the gourmet meals, service, and satisfaction found at McDonalds, Burger King, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, etc. Quite often I celebrate a race win by treating my fellow racers and myself to Double Quarterpounder's with hot and steamy S'mores Pies for dessert.

Last night was date night, and I decided to step out of the R/C world and take my lady friend to a nice dinner. While the urge to pull into the local Wendy's or Carl's Jr. was hard to fight off, I went all out and chose the fanciest place I could think of.

As we made our way inside we were greeted by a couple of nice elderly women dressed like the Queen of England. Upon sitting down at the freshly prepared table we were quickly served with enormous menus, appetizer choices, beverages, and more. I looked around and began thinking that my shorts and dirty TLR shirt from the track may not fit in with this crowd.

My R/C instinct expected to have a wobbly table, get my own plastic silverware, and fill up my Supersize cup with free refills at the pop machine. Instead, this restaurant sent very formally dressed waiters and waitresses with elegantly folded "hand towels" (not paper napkins) to our table regularly to take care of us. We were offered, and ordered, a four course meal which consisted of an appetizer, salad, entree, and dessert. The food was delivered on gorgeous plates instead of wrappers, the food was prepared and cooked by a professional chef instead of a high school skater boy, and the atmosphere was full of soothing music and lighting as opposed to the overcrowded lines and irritating beeps from the back kitchen.

Quite honestly, such a high-end establishment scared me a little. As R/C racers we often get consumed in the R/C world and forget that there is other ways of life and adventures to seek outside our hobby. For me it wasn't easy stepping away from the racer habits of dining and lifestyle to take on such an adventure, however,  I feel as though I am a braver, more courageous, and better man because of it.

All I can say is....Applebee's is one heck of a place.
