While driving around town or across the wide open plains, do you ever stop and think "WOW...I'd love to drive my R/C car on that!" I personally do this quite often, as in every time I'm in a vehicle. I have driven my R/C car through fast food drive thru's, skate parks, motocross tracks, in and out of retail stores, and even down the highway. I am guessing that while these are all very fun places to drive, majority of these locations are not ideal to hold an actual R/C race.
There is one place that I have driven, that could easily host a race, and I THINK would be EPIC! The local sand volleyball courts! Coming from a motocross background, there is something about running big knobby tires, throwing a big roost, and giant rolling bumps that catches my attention. While doing a recent product test, I found myself "stopping by" a nearby sand volleyball court just to try out a car in sand. This trip was meant to be a 10-20 minute journey, and turned into 2+ hours of driving in the sand. It had rained a few days before, and the maintenance crew had smoothed the entire court, however, It didn't take long before I had a very visible track carved in it, and we all took turns ripping around it!
Sand can be VERY hard on equipment, however, in my opinion is worth the wear for the amount of fun it provides. What if someone were to put together an event similar to that of the Southwick AMA Motocross National (all sand) for R/C car racing? What if you could gather all of the big name drivers, all of the big pin tires, and all of the beach babes you could find to make the race of the century?! Set aside the baby bottom smooth tracks, baby tread tires, finesse, and rhythm we are accustom to, and BRING ON THE SAND!
This is a promo video from Vaterra R/C for the Glamis Uno buggy, watch this and honestly tell me that these two guys racing through sand doesn't look at least a little bit fun!
To all of you race promoter's out there...if any of you decide this is in fact a worthy idea, and decide to put together such an event, please contact me immediately as I will be the first to sign up!
What are your thoughts and opinions of an all sand R/C car race? Would you participate, why or why not?
