The year was 2011, and I was living the best year of my professional racing career. I attended the 25th Annual Cactus Classic at SRS Raceway in Scottsdale, Arizona where I would DOMINATE 2wd modified buggy, 4wd modified buggy, and modified stadium truck. I made Ryan Cavalieri look like a beginner out there...no wait...that is not how that went at all. The REAL story is I spent an entire week under the scorching hot Arizona sun where I sun-baked my entire body on a 200 degree asphalt parking lot, broke three cars in half on the SAME brick wall in a matter of 14 total minutes on the track, and had my butt handed to me by a kid MAYBE 8 years old running a stock motor in the mod class.
So was the 40 hour roadtrip stuck in the truck with a gas-filled Homer (my dad) worth it? Absolutely. While my racing career didn't exactly shine as I had hoped for the week, that race would change my life forever. After having the opportunity to fill-in for race announcer, Richard Lake, I was approached by a very tall man with what looked like a trumpet (as Dave Duncan would say) on his shirt. As it turns out, that "trumpet" is actually a beacon, and is the worldwide symbol for LiveRC. This tall, trumpet shirt wearing man, was none other than LiveRC founder Brandon Rohde. We made small talk a bit, and then he knelt down on one knee and popped the question....
"Mike, although I've only known you a short time, will you be my LiveRC news guy?"
At that very moment, I started an amazing journey within the R/C racing industry. I would be given the opportunity to meet and work closely with manufacturer's, team managers, designers, industry legends, pro racers, and most importantly...YOU the LiveRC viewers.
As you probably have seen in earlier news today, after a three year journey, I have decided to take on a new adventure in the R/C industry. Taking my place here at LiveRC is the one and only Aaron Waldron. I wanted to take today's "Moment with Mike" to personally welcome Aaron, and say THANK YOU too ALL OF YOU for the great memories, friendships, and good times. I would also like to personally thank Brandon Rohde and the entire LiveRC crew for all they have done for me over the years.
I hope to see you all at the track soon, and until further notice, Mike Garrison...over and out.
