2012 has started off to be a CRAZY year of racing in all aspects. Major sponsor changes, new vehicles, and even more interesting is the results.
I was taking a little time this morning browsing through the results from some of this year's major events that have already taken place, and I began to notice a pattern. While the young guns are still going fast and are still "expected" to win, there has been a more than average amount of veteran racer comebacks for 2012.
Let me start off by saying, the term "veteran racer" does not necessarily mean old age, it simply means experienced. (At least that's what I tell my old man...I mean veteran racer father.)
Starting off the year was the was the Dirt Nitro Challenge where first we saw AKA's Mark Pavidis (former World Champion) drive his TLR 8ight-T to an impressive A-Main finish. In the buggy class, it was Hot Bodies Jesse Robbers who made a surprise charge to the front finishing just behind Ty Tessman for second. Robbers also DOMINATED the CRCRC Nitro Championships earlier in January.
Next up was the Psycho Nitro Blast where once again there was two season veteran's who impressed the crowd with their finishes. None other than "The King", Richard Saxton, would make a surprise comeback with his Associated RC8.2 for an A-Main finish in pro buggy. Long time racer, Billy Easton, piloted his Serpent to the win over a stacked field of drivers.
We then made our way to the ROAR On-road Carpet Nationals in Carrollton, Texas. This race was overwhelmed with impressive finishes including Mike Dumas 2nd place in Mod 1/12 scale, Paul Lemieux's mod touring domination, and Rick Hohwart and Ralph Burch's A-Main victories and finishes.
Our most recent stop was the Pro-Line Cactus Classic. Viper R/C's, Travis Amezcua, would surprise the field with multiple Mod 4wd buggy top 5 finishes ahead of several major "expected winners". Legendary Brian Kinwald would qualify 3rd in Pro-2 and 7th in 2wd Mod Buggy, proving he means business!
With all of that being said, while many feel as though this year's national and world championship titles are all but guaranteed to one of the up and coming and/or new generation of racers, I BELIEVE that this year is the is the year the old and wise veteran's of R/C will prove they still have it!
With several offroad and onroad championships still up for grabs in the coming months, which long-time racer do you think can pull off a major win for 2012?
