It's official, this is the LAST "Moment with Mike" for the year. There are a thousand different things to discuss, but seeing how it is the last one of 2013, I felt it might be appropriate to reflect back a little. This year has been a big year, in and out of the R/C world. While I do love R/C cars, this year meant a lot more to me than just R/C, and has taught me something I'll never forget.
Unfortunately, I lost two individuals in my life this year. First a long-time racing hero of mine, Kurt Caselli, after a crash while leading the Baja 1000. While I did not personally know Kurt, he was an idol to not only myself, but the motosports industry as a whole, much like Dale Earnhardt was to NASCAR fans. A month later, my friends and I received news that we had lost one of our own, Brandon Fisher, while working on his Bobcat (a passion of Brandon's, along with working on ANYTHING that rolls black smoke).
When your a kid and someone asks you what you want to be when you grow up, you can say anything in the world from astronaut to superhero, and in your heart at that very moment you believe that you CAN be that astronaut and superhero. As the years pass we are influenced to "grow up", set "realistic" goals, and become an adult. Life becomes centered around money, success, and the daily regime. We often lose track of the dreams we have inside, and the things that make us truly happy. In turn we grow old, have unfulfilled dreams and goals that we pushed aside, have an impressive business resume that is only worth the paper it's printed on, and have stacks of money that we can't take with us when we die.
Kurt Caselli and Brandon Fisher were two individuals that did not lose track of their dreams, goals, or happiness inside. They both lived everyday to the fullest, followed their dreams, and left this earth doing what they loved most. While it seems so wrong for such young people to be taken from this world so suddenly, it is an amazing reminder that life is truly a gift. You get one shot at it, and how you live it is all up to you.
For me, Kurt and Brandon have reminded me how I want to live my life, and have inspired me. My goal for 2014 (and beyond) is take a step back and start chasing my crazy "kid dreams", living, loving, and laughing like never before, and most of all...enjoy every moment as if it were the last.
What are some of the major things you reflect on from 2013? What are your goals for 2014?
