This coming Sunday, here in America, is our Mother's Day holiday. Mother's Day is a holiday that growing up as a kid made me SO mad. Who would invent a day, in the middle of nice springtime weather, that would require me to spend my ENTIRE day doing only things that my mom wants to do?! Breakfast with the ENTIRE family, mid-morning antique shopping, lunch at the tea room, an afternoon planting flowers, dinner at the movie theater watching a "family film", writing sappy Hallmark cards, and so on.
In 2007, our local track at the time hosted an RC Pro Series Division race. The race had 150+ entries and top drivers in attendance including Jared Tebo, Taylor James, Matt Gosch, Josh Wheeler, Kyle Skidmore, and an ongoing list of incredible talent. The weather was pouring rain all day for practice, a gooey muddy mess in the pits all day for qualifying, and scorching hot all weekend. All weekend long I struggled in qualifying, blew up a motor, and was mad at the world for such a frustrating weekend. Naturally, none of what was going wrong was my fault...instead I blamed it all on those around me. After a long day of qualifying, I found myself in the E-main. Being the fact it was the E-main, the race started at 7:30am on a Sunday. Only four drivers actually showed up for the main, as the rest of the field was worn out from the weekend and would rather sleep at the hotel.
The race started, and the announcer was asleep behind the mic, the turn marshalls looked like zombies standing at their cones, and the only thing awake and making noise was the four of us racing. A few minutes in, I come around the back straightaway and out of nowhere I hear someone clapping and cheering at the top of their lungs, "GO MICHAEL, GO! WOOOHOOOOO!"
Lap after lap the cheering continued as my car passed by. The race finished up and I looked up at the bleachers and sitting there smiling, cheering, and now waving at me is none other than my mom.
My mom didn't care about rain and mud, scorching heat, my bad attitude, or that I was in the E-Main at 7:30am on a Sunday with three other guys...there she was wide awake and cheering me on lap after lap from start to finish.
Over the past 25 years of my life I have done some really dumb things and had some really crazy ideas, and no matter what, the one person who has stood behind me 110% of the way is my Mom. Whether I'm racing R/C cars, strapping myself to a dirtbike to race motocross, flipping down the track UTV racing, in need of someone just to talk to, or just someone to help me get in and out of my wheelchair to get dressed in the morning...the person I can always count on is my Mom.
Turns out Mother's Day isn't a day designed to make kids mad, and force you to go antique shopping...instead it's a day to celebrate and slow down in life to spend time with the person who loves you no matter what, in which I call this person Mom.
I know that the holiday is technically called "Mother's Day", but I encourage all of you this Sunday to just say, "Thank You" to WHOEVER "Mom" may be in your life, no matter who it is that is there for you whenever and wherever you need them in life.
This is my Mom, and I can't thank her enough for being such an amazing person and part of my life. There is no amount of money, actions, or words that can say how much I appreciate all that she does. I'm proud to be your son, and I love you Mom.
