Today is Monday, therfore it seems like a good day to vent a little. There is one thing in R/C, along with nearly any other type of racing, that irritates me more than anything, when racers use the excuse "track is too easy". I would be rich if someone gave me a penny for everytime a racer gets beat and uses the excuse of "well the track is easy, that's why I got beat."
First of all, what exactly determines a track being easy? For some racers they consider hitting big jumps easy, but can't corner to save their life. Others can master tricky chicanes and switchbacks, but are lost when finding a good line through a rythm section.
Are some tracks easier for certain drivers to adapt and go fast on? Yes. Does this mean the reason they won is because the track is easy? No.
This entire topic started after watching this past weekend's supercross on TV where KTM's Ryan Dungey crashed and was able to come back and win in a 20 lap main. A friend of mine made the comment, "Dungey couldn't have done that if the track wasn't so easy." This got me thinking about the ongoing excuses at the local R/C races, national R/C races, and even world championship R/C races.
It's similar to people saying that certain drivers do better in truggy because it's easy. Just because it can be easier to drive than buggy at times, it is "easier" for everyone in the class, and therfore a win is still something to be proud of. It seems to me that more and more racers of all levels are having trouble accepting that they were just straight up beat, instead they have an excuse or "easy track" to blame.
I could ramble all-day, but to sum it up, my Monday rant is this:
I believe that fast guys go fast. Whether the track is tight and technical or smooth and wide open they will always go fast. Certain tracks suit certain drivers, and therefore they are able to accel, and that's part of racing. When a driver has the confidence, the setup, and the ability to adapt and go fast, that doesn't make a track easy. In my opinion that simply means the track is one that is different from what you are used to racing, he adapted and went fast....you didn't.
Let's face it, there is only one first place winner in every race, and the fact is no excuse can change that.
Whiners keep whining...Winners keep winning.
