Maifield returned to the top of the charts after setting the fastest time in the first qualifying run, nearly turning the first 11-lap run of the weekend and establishing himself as the early favorite to win what would be his fifth class championship. Confident in the performance of his JConcepts-shod Mugen Seiki Racing truck and suggesting his REDS Racing engine was perhaps too powerful for the conditions, the Arizona native said the combination forced him to drive calmly and that helped minimize his mistakes. Despite being unhappy with the decision to run softer swaybars and also having gone to the wrong shock oil, Ryan Lutz still managed another second-place finish and greatly improved his points total. The third-fastest time went to XRAY's Tanner Stees, driving the XT8 2017 he's had for only a week, which was also the 20-year-old's best performance of the weekend.
