For the second year in a row, the Beetops track near Nishikawa, Japan hosted the Japan Model Radio Control Car Association championships for touring cars. The race was held under the constant threat of rain, which washed out the sixth round of qualifying.
In the premier Super Expert division, Tamiya driver Akio Sobue started from the front of the grid after earning the distinction of being top qualifier. He won the first and third main events to clinch his first championship over teammate and defending champion Naoto Matsukura, with Hayato Ishioka finishing third.
