Sousa Doubles at the 2019 NY Winter Championships

Race Report by Mark Sousa

This past weekend I took a quick 4 hour drive to Makintraxx Rc raceway in Rush Ny. The track is a big wet clay track which was pretty challenging to get used to. I sanded to new sets of M4 Microns and Electron for both my XB2 and XB4 cars for the beginning of practice. The track started off very slick in the beginning of the day and slowly progressed and got more grip and I felt my cars were both on pace.

In the first round I was able to TQ 4 wheel but had some counting problems so it would put me 4th. In 2 wheel I was on a TQ run then made a mistake and missed out on it for round one.

Round 2 the grip came up more and I get like my 4 wheel wasn’t as good as I didn’t know the grip came up that much. I would end up 2nd. Kevin Sillar would go on to Overall TQ in 4 wheel. In round 2 of 2 wheel I was on a blistering pace early and felt super comfortable with my XB2. Unfortunately, I would land wrong on a jump and had DNF. In round 3 my car was great and I was able to lead from the beginning to the end to take the round 3 TQ.

I would start 2nd in both 2 wheel and 4 wheel for Sunday’s mains. On main day I was able to get my four-wheel-drive feeling really good and was able to take two out of the three a mains and for the overall win.

In 2 wheel drive I had a great battle with Aaron Kothman for 1st in A1 and was finally able to make a pass with one minute to go and cruise to the win. In A main number two I was able to make a pass early to take the lead and led the entire race until I made a small mistake on the second to last lap which would cause me to lose the lead and give it back to Aaron and I would finish second. In A main number three I had some battles in the beginning with me and Aaron taking place for the overall win. I was able to finally get around him after a few laps and would be able to open up the gap and take the win and so also overall.
