Everybody knows that Friday is meant for reminiscing old times. Each week we take you back in time as we flashback to some of R/C racing's greatest moments, products, drivers, and more!

Flashback: 2010
ROAR Electric Off-Road Nationals at Leisure Hours Raceway

Today marks the seven-year anniversary of the start of the 2010 ROAR Electric Off-Road Nationals, which was hosted by Leisure Hours Raceway in Joliet, IL. You can check out our full photo gallery from the event here: www.liverc.com/photos/albums/6-2010_ROAR_Electric_Off-Road_Nationals/

The large outdoor track that had hosted the Fuel Off-Road Nationals just two years prior was used for the electric event as well, and the hard-packed dirt developed quite a blue-groove that traced a difficult layout featuring a few tricky jump sections, a set of whoops, and a long back straightaway.

A who’s-who of the electric off-road scene attended, with the event not only crowning national titles but also determining the 2011 IFMAR Worlds team. There were 299 total entries over eight different classes, including the premiere of the 4WD Short Course category as a demonstration. Here’s the entry breakdown:
  • Stock Buggy - 35 entries
  • Sportsman Stadium Truck - 26 entries
  • Stock Short Course - 36 entries
  • Modified 2WD Buggy - 59 entries
  • Modified 4WD Buggy - 46 entries
  • Modified Stadium Truck - 53 entries
  • Modified Short Course - 33 entries
  • 4WD Short Course Demo - 11 entries

Modified 2WD Buggy
The most prestigious class of the weekend also produced the most exciting racing of the weekend.

Jared Tebo earned the Top Qualifying honors for the coveted 2WD Modified class, and held off a hard charge from fifth qualifier Ryan Cavalieri to win A1 by less than fourth tenths of a second, while Mike Truhe was the first of those who didn’t make it by for a 14th lap and Maifield finished less than two seconds further back.

In A2, Ryan Maifield won from second on the grid while Truhe beat Tebo by just over half of a second and Cavalieri finished fourth. The shuffled results meant, with one race to go, the top four drivers were separated by just two points.

In A3, sixth qualifier Matt Chambers raced his way into the mix and played spoiler. Truhe beat Chambers by less than three tenths of a second while his title rivals faltered, as Cavalieri was third, Tebo was fifth and Maifield ninth.

Once the points were tallied, Truhe was awarded the national championship by one point over Jared Tebo, and it was just one more point back to a tie between Cavalieri and Maifield. Cavalieri won the tiebreaker by 1.7 seconds for the final podium spot.

The Team Losi Racing squad was pumped about Truhe’s win.

Modified 4WD Buggy
The coveted 4WD buggy class was no slam dunk, either. Once again, Tebo started from the front of the grid after commanding qualifying — but this time he was unable to convert the advantage into victory in A1. Instead, second qualifier Ryan Cavalieri won the first A-Main with the only 15-lap run of the finals, while third qualifier Ryan Maifield beat Tebo by nearly 3.5 seconds for second.

Tebo took off in A2 to win by 3.5 seconds over Cavalieri, while Maifield finished fourth behind Truhe.

Maifield recovered in A3 and sped off to the win by 4.4 seconds.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Dakotah Phend raced from fifth on the grid to beat Tebo by a half-second for the runner-up spot and Cavalieri settled for fourth.

In the end, Cavalieri’s extra lap in A1 made all the difference as he beat then-teammate Maifield on a tie-breaker, with Tebo just one point further back in third.

Final results:
  1. Ryan Cavalieri
  2. Ryan Maifield
  3. Jared Tebo (TQ)

  9. Billy Fischer

Modified Stadium Truck
Despite the setbacks in the 2WD and 4WD buggy classes, it was the Modified Stadium Truck class where Jared Tebo did not start up front that he was able to win convincingly. In the first leg, second qualifier Tebo blew past TQ Dustin Evans and beat fourth qualifier Mike Truhe by 4.5 seconds, with another 3.3 seconds to seventh qualifier Billy Fischer in third.

Tebo repeated the feat in A2, beating Evans by almost 1.2 seconds to lock up the championship with Truhe over five seconds further back in third.

After finishing fourth in the first two legs, third qualifier Ryan Cavalieri won A3 by 2.5 seconds over Truhe with Evans just four-tenths of a second further back.

Tebo’s perfect score was two points better than Truhe, who finished second with a one-point advantage over a tie between Cavalieri and Evans. Cavalieri’s A1 score, which was a 14-lap run, was more than enough to give him the tiebreaker over Evans’ two 13-lap results.

Final results:
  1. Jared Tebo
  2. Mike Truhe
  3. Ryan Cavalieri
  4. Dustin Evans (TQ)
  5. Billy Fischer
  6. Matt Chambers
  7. Dakotah Phend
  8. Ty Tessmann
  9. Frank Root
  10. Steven Hartson
Modified Short Course
After earning the front row on the grid after qualifying, Ryan Maifield pulled away from the field in A1 to win by 4.1 seconds over Travis Amezcua with another 2.1 seconds back to Jesse Robbers in third.

However, Maifield dropped out of A2 with less than a minute to go, which gave fourth qualifier Travis Amezcua the win and a chance at the overall, with Brian Kinwald and Robbers each 1.5 seconds further apart from one another.

Maifield rebounded in A3, finishing nearly 3.2 seconds ahead of the field to wrap up the title while Amezcua edged Kinwald by less than two-tenths. Maifield’s perfect score left him one point ahead of Amezcua, with another two points back to Kinwald in third.

Final results:
  1. Ryan Maifield (TQ)
  2. Travis Amezcua
  3. Brian Kinwald
  4. Jesse Robbers

  6. Mark Pavidis
  7. Joe Pillars
  8. Brad Shearer
  9. Aaron Alexander
  10. Justin Driemeier
4WD Short Course Demo
Just one year after the 2WD Short Course class debuted at the ROAR Nationals, the 2010 Nats marked the first year that the 4x4 short course category was offered as a demonstration class. No factory stars opted to compete, leaving eleven privateers to battle it out. After setting the fastest times in qualifying, SoCal native Brian Sullivan prevailed despite a DNF in A2 by winning A1 and A3 for the victory. Jeff Fisher finished second behind Sullivan in A1 and A3, and won A2 in his absence, for second overall and Ray Kindstrom finished two points further back for the final spot on the podium.

Final results:
  1. Brian Sullivan
  2. Jeff Fisher
  3. Ray Kindstrom
  4. Jason Hills
  5. Jon Toussaint
  6. Alex Eklund
  7. Mark Valeo
  8. Chris Cairns
  9. Chris Kovachevich
  10. David Drabek
  11. Patrick Davis
