Last weekend, Hot Rod Hobbies in Saugus, CA played host to the Reedy Truck Race of Champions. The event, which features a wide array of truck-only classes, featured most of the top electric off-road talent in the country.
Unlike other Reedy Races, the signature "Reedy Race" format wasn't used to determine the victors. Instead, the traditional qualifying and main methods were used to determine this years champions. The three main classes in which pro-level drivers were competing were Pro-2, Pro-4, and Stadium Truck.
Most hardcore R/C racers' eyes fell upon the stadium truck class, as we continue to wait and see what comes of the once popular class. Many suspect an increased interest amongst the racing community following the release of TLR's "22T" racing truck. While the truck has definitely invigorated on-line message boards and LRC chat with chatter of an impending "revival" of the class, it has yet to revolutionize anything on the track itself, failing to win in its debut, and not placing in the top three at the Reedy Race. Instead, it was Jared Tebo and his Kyosho who were victorious for the second major gathering of stadium trucks in a row (the previous being the ROAR nationals).
Meanwhile, the classes most responsible for this race even existing in 2011 (Short Course) featured just as many top pros battling for a win- something we haven't seen too often due to teams spreading their talent out between the three major truck classes at other events. So one could say- the Reedy Truck Race had the toughest competition in both Pro-2 and Pro-4 out of any other race held during the year- simply because all of the drivers ran both classes.
In Pro-2, Jared Tebo capitalized on his TQ position to win A1 and A2 and cleanly sweep the class which Ryan Maifield won just over a month ago at the ROAR nats. Pro-4, on the other hand, featured both of Team Associated's "Ryans" (Maifield and Cavalieri), who were mysteriously absent in this class at the ROAR nats.
The two drivers seemed more than comfortable with the class at the Reedy Race, however, by showing blistering speed all weekend long. In qualifying, current electric world champion Ryan Cavalieri took the top spot on the grid for Sunday's mains, only to give way to hard-charging teammate Ryan Maifield for the overall victory in the class. TLR driver and Current Pro-4 national Champion Dakotah Phend was also able to get passed Cavalieri in the mains to secure the second overal position.
