The world of tires can be a nightmare for not only new racers, but veterans alike. There are SO many choices in tire tread patterns, rubber compounds, foam inserts, wheels, and so on. Our primary 1:10 scale offroad testing ground is an indoor track that can vary from smooth to bumpy, wet to dry, and high traction to low traction on any given day. This makes it ideal to put offroad products to the test. This week we decided to try out the new JConcepts "Dirt Webs" 1:10 scale buggy tires.

The "Dirt Webs" are an original tread design that was the brainchild of Brian Kinwald and Jason Ruona. The tire is based off of the successful "Pressure Points" tread pattern, but incorporates horizontal and vertical bars as well. The horizontal bars are are designed for forward grip and stability, while the vertical bars are designed for side bite. We put the tires to the test in a variety of indoor offroad conditions.

Pros:
  • In almost all conditions (especially medium to high traction) we found this tire to be more stable and consistent than an all bar tread tire (such as a Barcode).
  • Offers good forward traction when accelerating in medium to high traction conditions.
  • Very good side bite, even in bumpy and slick cornering conditions.
  • We tried each compound, and preferred the Green (Super Soft) compound over the others in almost all conditions.
  • The tire fits the wheel nicely, and mounts up easily without any major cleaning, or removing of unwanted flashing.
  • Doesn't need to be "broken in" like many other new tires to begin working properly.
Cons:
  • The tread is small, which works great, but like any small tread (especially in Super Soft compound) has a tendency to wear faster than others depending on the conditions.
  • Includes the JConcepts AND-1 foam inserts, which gave us an unstable and inconsistent feeling compared to a closed cell foam.
Conclusion:
The JConcepts "Dirt Webs" tire is definitely an ideal choice for serious 1:10 offroad buggy racers. Assuming your track has a medium to high traction surface, and a little to no dust on top, this tire works brilliant. Some find the feel of the AND-1 foam to be just what they are looking for, however, we on the other hand ditched the AND-1 foam for closed cell foam, and our personal lap times got better and better each lap.
