It's easy to see why the round results were, once again, unpredictable and crazy. How crazy? Ty Tessmann wasn't even in the top 30!

“It was good,” said Kyle McBride several heats before finding out that his time would survive the rest of the round. “I made some late changes for the weather, said the Australian, having gone to lighter diff oils, less camber, lighter sway bars, and X3 Holeshots. A really smooth run with “no dramas” was good enough for the fifth round TQ given the crazy conditions.

“It was okay,” said Lee Martin with a few heats to go, worried that drivers with drier conditions would have a chance to beat his time. As far as the rainy conditions, Lee said, “It’s difficult if you get the wrong end of the deal. You can’t just change the tires, and you have to make changes two heats ahead of time. You have so much to change from wet to dry, especially when you’re right next to an active volcano that likes to play with the weather.”

“Maximum luck! Luck is fine, anything I can get,” said Atsushi Hara. The 2008 world champion said his pace still isn’t fast enough, but at least with the wet conditions he’s able to make the 10-minute heat without pitting. His plan for the sixth round will depend on how much the track changes.

Renaud Savoya said, “I took the most of the track conditions.” The Frenchman acknowledged that the track was faster for race four than it was for heats 1-3, and said, “I’m crossing my fingers because I need the points.”

Mike Truhe’s best run of the weekend came in the fifth round, though the Serpent USA driver said he should’ve chosen X3 compound tires but went out on M3 Blockades instead. Having a pretty clean run with a few bobbles here and there, Mike said, “I have some good runs now, but nothing to write home to Mom about.” He believes he’ll make the quarter finals with another good run, and with track conditions changing so much the extra practice on main day might not be a bad thing.

Young Italian driver Alex Zanchettin had his best result as well, as he was able to take advantage of being in race four with Martin and Savoya. A roller coaster of a heat race saw him as low as eighth on laps 2-3 and as high as 1st on laps 7-10.
