After struggling with pace and consistency in practice, defending champion Marc Rheinard progressed through the first four rounds of qualifying, eventually setting the fastest time in the final run on Sunday and leading the overall points. With three of four rounds counting, he's tied with Japanese driver Akio Sobue but ahead after the tiebreaker, as both drivers took advantage of mistakes by top seed Naoto Matsukura to score much-needed points.
Coincidentally, Sobue is driving Rheinard's old car!

Still feeling uncomfortable with the difference in sheer pace between his own car and that of Naoto Matsukura, Marc Rheinard's steady improvement throughout today's qualifying runs - and his lack of mistakes - netted him two second-place finishes and a round win to go with a DNF. As each driver's four best runs of six will be used to determine the overall qualifying order, the Day One points were calculated using the three best scores of four - and Rheinard leads after the tiebreaker.
Sobue started off the day by with a TQ run before a DNF of his own in the second round, then finished second in rounds three and four to earn the same 4-point total as Rheinard. The two are Tamiya Racing Factory teammates in the Touring Car division, and congratulated each other after a successful first day of qualifying.
