Three-time former winner Naoto Matsukura had perhaps his best qualifying run behind the wheel of his Roche Rapide 2017 prototype to set the fastest time in the final round of qualifying, which earned him valuable points - enough to score the second position on the grid behind the driver who beat him two years ago, Marc Rheinard. Rheinard did not finish the final round and, in fact, left the door open for Akio Sobue to potentially beat him for the overall, had the Japanese driver won the final round nd set a fast enough time to beat Rheinard for the overall. Instead, Sobue - driving Rheinard's old car - will start third behind the top two finishers from 2014.
