The 2013 Iowa Summer Series concluded with the Final round at LRT Raceway in Evansdale, IA on October 12, 2013. The series consisted of 3 rounds with the best 2 of 3 counting in addition to the 1 ½ X Points earned at the Finals. Virtually every class had tight battles coming into the finals and as the main events carried on, it wasn’t uncommon for point positions to be changing lap by lap.

4wd SCT:
Tekno’s Adam Grimm was well in control coming into the finals but still needed a solid finish to secure the title. After fighting off strong challenges from TQ Robert Henderson and Aaron Martin, Grimm would take the win for the day and the overall Summer Series Championship.

1/8 Sportsman Buggy:
Sportsman Buggy started off slow in the series but ended being one of the most competitive and entertaining classes in the series. With several drivers in contention for the Summer Series title every point would count in the A-main. Xray’s Seth Freeze had a slim lead coming into the finals and capitalized with a TQ at the Finals but still needed a solid run to keep Joe Cox and Alex Drottz behind him in the final standings. LRT local Curt Pfalzgraf would get the best of the field in the main after a 2 year hiatus from R/C Racing; Seth Freeze would bring home title with a solid 2nd place finish.

1/8 Electric Buggy:

Electric Buggy was one of the most well attended classes throughout the series and Tekno’s Jason Bloom would make the most of it by winning 2 of the 3 preliminary rounds, carrying a perfect score into the finals. With the bigger point values at the finals he would still need a good finish and started off well with the TQ bonus points at the finals. In the 10 minute A-main, it would be 3rd place qualifier “Farmer” Phil Knoll finding himself at the point and being able to hold of Bloom for the win! A very popular win among the Iowa crowd! Jason Bloom would win the overall and “Farmer” Phil made a nice jump from 4th to 2nd with his win.

1/8 Truggy:
Truggy attendance was a bit down this year but that didn’t mean the battles at each race and in the point standings weren’t there. Nitro Al Larson, Joe Cox and Phil Knoll all with a good shot at the title coming into the finals. Non point contender Shane Luckey would swoop up the TQ and win at the finals leaving 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots for our title contenders. Joe Cox would take a well deserved 2nd in the race but would fall just 1 point short of the overall. Nitro Al Larson got home in 3rd with Phil Knoll (racing an SC8 all season) finishing up 4th. Overall just 3 points separated our top 3!

1/8 Pro Buggy:
As with most series or races, 1/8 Pro Buggy is the premier class. This year’s series didn’t disappoint as there were 3 different winners from the 3 preliminary races. The result? 3 drivers separated by 3 points entering the finals. Xray’s Danny Bartholomew won round 1, Bluegroove Hobbies Sam Anderson won round 2 and Devin McGee stormed to a round 3 TQ and win. Setting up the finals with McGee with a 1 point edge over Anderson and Bartholomew another 2 markers back, with the point structure for the finals it basically came down to the finishing order between these 3 drivers. With the title on the line the top 3 didn’t disappoint with Bartholomew earning the TQ points on his home track, McGee and Anderson right behind in Q2 and Q3 respectively. So it came down to the 30 minute final, if any of the 3 contenders beat the other 2 he would be the series champion. Bartholomew drove a nearly flawless 30 minutes and steadily pulled away from the field to take down the win and the Championship. Sam Anderson would work his way into the 2nd spot in the race and for the series and Devin McGee would fall out with an electrical issue, setting the young gun back to 3rd overall.
