"Racer Spotlight" by Lance McDonald:

We have all had the feeling, the moment when we arrive at the track and everyone just has a special spark, the electricity in the air. I had the pleasure a few months ago to witness and honor of experiencing this act first hand as the announcer. In late October at Bashers RC Raceway in Palm Beach Gardens, 12 year old Robert Molina had the drive of his life. Robert is the nicest, most appreciative young man I have ever met. He puts all of his heart into all he does, from being a 7th grade honor roll student at King’s Academy in West Palm FL, playing football, trombone in band, too soon earn a black belt in tae kwon do.

Robert started mid pack after he qualified his T4.2 in the Amain. At the start of the race, Robert never faltered as he made a mad rush for the front. He made the passes early and found himself P1 with more than 3 minutes left on the 5 minute race clock. Robert ran smooth as he worked around lapped traffic, he could hear me announcing his lead and that 2nd had cleared traffic looking for the green-white and blue truck leading the race. Robert was leading by almost half a lap with less than 2 minute left to go. I looked at his parents Jose and Laura with excitement ready to explode from their faces. As time was running down 2nd place was closing in and it was going to be very close as a pack of 4 lap traffic trucks were just in front of Robert. Like a seasoned professional, he made the fast clean pass to maintain his lead. The final tone had sounded as he had just started his final lap, once again I took a glance at Mom and Dad as I could see the tears of joy and pride. The crowd that had gathered was roaring with cheers and applauses. Robert crossed the line for the final time with his first ever major series win. With tears running down his face, a smile as big as Texas, many of Robert’s friends and peers rushed the drivers stand to hug him and give their congratulations.

It moments like this that just need to shared as this is why we race. Good luck to all the racers, young and old, as we race for our great moments!
